IR - Interventional RadiographyOverview Interventional Radiology (IR) is minimally invasive treatment for many medical problems that formerly required surgery. IR focuses on using the tools of radiology (x-rays, CT scans, ultrasound) to guide instruments to the site of the medical problem. Instruments used include tiny tubes, wires, balloons, and coils. IR may be used to visualize blood vessels, insert balloons to open clogged blood vessels, insert feeding tubes directly into the stomach, and more. Many IR procedures can be done in an outpatient setting. Usually, only a local anesthetic and sedation are required. |
